WELCOME

A website celebrating and discussing the history of the area West of Knaresborough and East of Harrogate, that has grown and flourished separately from it's more illustrious neighbours.  A place with a character of it's own.

Long ago in a valley half way between the ancient market town of Knaresborough and the twin villages of High and Low Harrogate, a narrow stream flowed through a marshy area on it's way to join the river Crimple and then the river Nidd.  For many years there was very little here, it was just common land within the ancient royal forest of Knaresborough. As the years past by a few scattered farms began to appear along with a few simple cottages, and a windmill. Eventually during 1848 and 1849 the railways came along and a station was built here, initially to serve Harrogate and Knaresborough, other industries came in to take advantage of the railway network and a community grew around it.

This place may lack the medieval charm of Knaresborough, and the Victorian splendour of Harrogate , for this is Starbeck. This is where people came to work and live. There is life here, there are stories here, quite different to our neighbours up the hill or across the river.
